From the moment we chartered LSLP, we have lived by our motto "How big do we want to dream today?" Dreaming big sometimes means knocking on doors, talking to folks around the world who like dreaming as big as we do... and sometimes feeling blessed when they answer our call!
This page will feature all our affiliates and partners around the world, both individuals and groups, who are helping us not only dream big, but also dream global.

NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL Affiliates
The following are faculty members and doctoral students at different institutions around the world who are networking with us. They have helped our work in different capacities, from serving in MA thesis committees, to writing joint research proposals, to engaging in networking efforts. The fact that they believe in our proposal means a lot to us and we can only look forward to our extended collaboration:

INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERS
Below you will find a list of different research groups and institutes that collaborate with us. They are located all across the world and we are constantly seeking ways to work together, via research projects, presentations, or publications.
Initiative for literacy in a digital age (Oklahoma State University)
This initiative, under the leadership of LSLP International Affiliate Dr. Shelbie Witte, is exploring how teachers are appropriating technological tools to improve the quality of literacy instruction in schools in the US and elsewhere. With the Initiative, we share the common goal of improving school literacies and the need for expanded frameworks for literacy instruction to better respond to today's societal needs for text creation and interpretation.
We invite you to to visit the Initiative's website and Facebook community. We also invite you to see some of the work we've already done together. |
Center for Intercultural Dialogue (CID)
The Center for Intercultural Dialogue, under the direction of Dr. Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz, is interested in developing research on intercultural dialogue, providing thus a space for scholars around the world to discuss different issues related to this topic.
LSLP shares a great deal with CID. On the one hand, our chair and one of our faculty members are currently affiliated to CID as researchers. LSLP researchers have already contributed three papers to this series (on Language Ecology, Multiculturalism, and Reflexivity), with a fourth under review. On the other hand, CID's Key Concepts served as inspiration for our LSLP Micro-Papers. Beyond this, we share the common goal of becoming arenas for exchange of ideas in our fields. And, in many ways, one of the ultimate goals of an expanded view of literacy is to become a tool for intercultural dialogue! We invite you to visit CID's website. |
New Literacies Collaborative (NLC) - (NC State University)
The New Literacies Collaborative, under the leadership of LSLP International Affiliate Dr. Hiller Spires and Dr. John Lee, is a multidisciplinary research team seeking to find new ways to incorporate new literacies as "the theoretical and practical intersection of literacy, evolving technologies, and media" in different areas of teaching and teacher education.
We are excited to see the possibilities of joint work with NLC, since we share common interests in social media, gaming literacies, and online comprehension. We invite you to check their website and Facebook community. |
INternational Institute of Qualitative Inquiry - (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)
The International Institute of Qualitative Inquiry, located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is a multidisciplinary effort aimed at the promotion of qualitative research methodology. IIQI organizes the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry, an even that LSLP is now keeping as part of our regular agenda and where we have presented our work extensively over the past two years. As of 2017, LSLP (via our Chair) will be also part of the Advisory Committee for the Collaborating Sites Network.
Being a collaborating site for IIQI will enable LSLP to continue expanding our research boundaries, as we are now exploring multiple forms of ethnographic methods (e.g. digital ethnography , autoethnography, etc.) within literacy research. We invite you to check their website. |
collaborative center for literacy development - (university of kentucky)
The Collaborative Center for Literacy Development (CCLC), a research initiative created in 1998 and currently housed at the University of Kentucky under the direction of Dr. George Hruby, is a state-wide collaborative effort aimed at improving the quality of literacy instruction and professional development in the State of Kentucky.
CCLC became one of our partners in late 2017 and we look forward to all the new avenues of collaboration with this center, Dr. Hruby, and his colleagues. We invite you to check their website. |
creative agency - (RMIT/MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA)
Creative Agency, an organization created by Dr. Dan Harris at RMIT Melbourne in 2017, is a community that brings together artists, researchers, the industry and other organizations in an effort to use creativity, arts, and education as tools for social change. As an international effort, Creative Agency seeks partners from all around the globe. LSLP's participation is twofold, as our Chair is part of their team of Creative Agents and LSLP itself is listed as a Creative Organization involved with the Agency.
We joined forces with Creative Agency at the end of 2017 and we are excited about the potential joint work we will be doing with them in the immediate future. We invite you to check their website. |
TRANSnational critical literacies network (icln)
The Translational Critical Literacies Network (TCLN) is a research and advocacy initiative launched in 2018 interested in expanding the existing global networks around critical literacy. Considering that the five charter members of TCLN (Drs. Jessica Zacher Pandya, Raúl Alberto Mora, Jennifer Alford, Noah Asher Golden, and Roberto Santiago de Roock) are all involved with LSLP as International Affiliates, it makes sense for LSLP to be an active partner in the growth of this new network.
TCLN will be soon launching its social media engine and website. Stay tuned! |
tour languages
Tour Languages is a language center from LSLP researcher Edison Castrillón. Tour Languages intends to help the local communities (mostly outside of Medellín) to strengthen their cultural and social development while promoting bilingualism and multiculturality through language learning.
LSLP is now a strategic partner for Tour Languages as we are interested in helping the regions outside Medellín improve the quality of language and literacy instruction. As will be the case with Hello Yellow, we also intend to help Tour Languages through workshops and research projects. You can learn more about Tour Languages by checking their Facebook page. |
eastern virginia writing project
The Eastern Virginia Writing Project, under the leadership of LSLP International Affiliate Dr. Lindy L. Johnson, aims to help improve the quality of writing education in schools in Virginia. EVWP works with local communities and schools to promote better practices around the learning and teaching of writing.
We see plenty of avenues for mutual collaboration between EVWP and LSLP, as we both share an interest in helping teachers improve their instructional literacy practices and we are both interested in developing research with teachers and around our communities. You can learn more about EVWP by visiting their website and Twitter feed. |
ELT THink Tank
ELT Think Tank started in 2018 as an initiative aimed at providing language teachers with a space for "life-long learning, a growth mindset, and collaboration as the core principles to professional development," as described on their website. ELT Think Tank is a very active initiative, leading efforts for professional development, as was the case of their first "Un-ELT" event held last May.
We are excited to develop joint collaboration with ELT Think Tank, as we share with them our interest in creating grassroots models for professional development. We also look forward to helping ELT Think Tank develop more research in the field of language education. You can learn more about ELT Think Tank by visiting their website and Facebook community. |
Studies of Instruction across Subjects and Competences (SISCO) - (university of oslo, norway)
SISCO is a research group from the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Oslo (UiO), co-directed by Prof. Lisbeth M Brevik, Prof. Marte Blikstad-Balas, and Dr. Camilla Magnusson. SISCO's main research focus explores the impact of diverse instructional practices in student learning.
SISCO became LSLP's latest partner in 2023, as we share interests in improving instructional practices in our schools. Additional, SISCO's research interest include gaming/gamification and critical literacies, two areas where LSLP has already made significant progress over the years. We invite you to learn more about SISCO by visiting their website. |
PAST research projects
In addition to our research projects, LSLP is branching out as a member (initially via our chair) of international research projects. Here is a list of past research projects in which we have participated
Multimodal curriculum and international cooperation in artistic education
This is a transnational pilot project, led by Dr. Polina Golovátina-Mora. The goal of this project is to engage in extended conversations and research around the role of multimodality and art in school curricula. LSLP is part of this project, both as part of the international team of experts (including LSLP International Affiliate Dr. William Kist) and by collecting data from our teacher-researchers that can support the study. LSLP is also offering media support: We already hosted a webinar about creativity in our YouTube channel.

DIGITALLY LITERATE PROJECT - (uNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA AND COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON)
This project, led by Drs. Michelle Schira Hagerman and W. Ian O'Byrne, is an open-access project aimed at learning how teachers and educators rely on digital texts and tools as part of their instructional practices. LSLP is collaborating with this project in terms of data collection and analysis (both in English and Spanish) and the writing of reports and publications.
You can learn more about the Digitally Literate Project by checking their website. |
Makey project - (university of sheffield)
Project MakEY (Markerspaces in the early years: Enhancing digital literacy and creativity), led by Professor Jackie Marsh (University of Sheffield) and funded by the EU H2020 Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) program, aims to expand the use and design of digital literacy artifacts and related technological devices.
LSLP will be participating in MakEY as part of a pool of international partners from Australia, Canada, South Africa, and the United States in diverse activities, including hosting EU researchers involved in MakEY. In June, 2018, we welcomed LSLP International Affiliate Dr. Mark Payne to work with us. You can learn more about the MakEY project by checking their website. You can also keep track of recent news via their blog. |
